Licensing: Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy a license?

Most of our apps offer licenses for purchase directly from the Red Sweater Store and from Apple’s Mac App Store.

If you are purchasing an app such as MarsEdit that is free to download from the Mac App Store, you can purchase a license in the In-App Purchase window, which can be opened from the application’s menu in the upper-left corner of the Mac screen.

How do I recover a lost license?

If you purchased directly from the Red Sweater Store, please contact us directly, including the name and email you think is most likely associated with the license. We can look it up in our records and re-send it to you.

If you purchased from the Mac App Store, Apple handles all licensing of the application. Just make sure you are logged in to the same Apple ID that you used when you made the purchase, and re-download the app from the store. If you are using an app such as MarsEdit that offers in-app purchases, you may then need to click the “Restore Purchases” button in the In-App Purchase window to completely recover your license.

How do I unlock the app with my license?

If you purchased your license directly from the Red Sweater Store, you’ll receive a registration code that can be copied and pasted directly into the app’s licensing window.

If you purchased your license from the Mac App Store, there is no registration code, but your purchase is managed by Apple. When you download the app on a new Mac, or click “Restore Purchase” from the licensing window, Apple provides an up-to-date proof-of-purchase which includes information about any licenses you have purchased.

Can I unlock the Mac App Store version with my registration code?

When you purchase a license, it is important that you download and use the version of the app that comes from the store that you purchased from. The way Apple’s licensing for the Mac App Store works, it is not possible to unlock full functionality using a license that was purchased directly from the Red Sweater Store.

What if the app doesn’t accept my registration code?

If you are trying to unlock one of our apps with a registration, first make sure you are running a version of the app that was downloaded directly from our site, and not from the Mac App Store.

If you’re running a directly-downloaded version of one of our apps, you should find a Registration menu item in the menu for the name of the app, in the upper-left hand corner of the Mac’s screen. Open this window and enter the registration information to unlock the app.
